Allergies are incredibly common, especially in children, and refer to when your body has a reaction to a particular food or substance.

9 Common allergens

Although most allergies go away when you get older, there are some allergies that are lifelong.

Having an allergy can be annoying but, in most cases, can be easily managed.

Substances that cause an allergic reaction are known as allergens, and there are many of these to be aware of.

Read on to discover the nine most common allergens and how you can recognize an allergic reaction.

What are the most common allergens?

  1. Grass and tree pollen

Grass and tree pollen are one of the most prevalent allergens and cause the condition known as hay fever. Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, typically manifests itself in a runny nose, sneezing, and red, watery eyes.

Avamys Nasal Spray is particularly effective at treating the symptoms of hay fever and can be purchased online without the need for a prescription.

  1. Dust mites

Some people are sensitive to dust mites and may experience symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, congestion, and itchy, watery eyes. This allergen can also cause asthma symptoms.

  1. Animal dander

Pet allergies are fairly common and cause symptoms that are consistent with swollen nasal passages. Coming into contact with animal dander can also cause contact dermatitis.

  1. Food

Many children have some type of food allergy, although most grow out of these. Some of the most common food allergies are nuts, shellfish, eggs, and cow’s milk.

  1. Insect bites & stings

Insect stings and bites are incredibly common and typically only cause mild irritation. However, in some cases, they can be painful and trigger a severe allergic reaction. The most common insects that bite are mosquitos, fleas, and bedbugs.

  1. Medication

Some people are allergic to certain medications, such as aspirin and other painkillers. You can also be allergic to certain antibiotics.

  1. Latex

The latex that is used to make some gloves and condoms can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

  1. Mold

If you have mold in your home, this can release small particles into the air that you can breathe in. In some people, this can result in an allergic reaction.

  1. Household chemicals

Certain household chemicals, such as laundry detergent and other cleaning agents, can cause an allergic reaction. Some people can also be allergic to the chemicals in hair dye.

What are the most common signs of an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction normally manifests itself within a few minutes of someone being exposed to an allergen. The most common signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Sneezing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Eyes that are red, itchy, and/or watery
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • A rash that is red and/or itchy
  • Worsening asthma or eczema

As mentioned briefly above, most allergic reactions are mild and nothing to worry about. However, in the case of a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, urgent medical attention is required.

How to treat allergies

If you think you have a mild allergic reaction, your best course of action is to visit your local pharmacist to ask for advice. Alternatively, you can purchase antihistamines online without the need for a prescription.
